Since the mid twentieth century, cable television has been a big business throughout North America. For decades it was a major growth industry, but has leveled off in recent years due to high market saturation and competition from satellite TV providers.

In the past few years, digital cable compression technologies have been developed to provide enhanced services like high-definition television (HDTV), cable broadband, and digital telephone offerings.

This expansion of service is putting cable companies into increasing competition with the telephone and broadband offerings of telecom carriers. Most analysts agree that increasing convergence will ultimately have a huge impact on the media and communications industry in general, and potentially trigger a trend towards mergers and consolidation of industry giants.
