The North American cell phone industry has grown enormously in the past decade or so. The vast majority of Canadians and Americans are now subscribers to some sort of mobile phone service.

Future trends, however, indicate that the mobile phone industry in North America is beginning to level off, and voice revenues are gradually declining as the market becomes more competitive, and prices drop. This trend has prompted mobile phone subscribers to provide a number of additional services for cell phones, on top of core voice functionality.

Users with sufficiently advanced handsets can now send email, surf the internet, play games, download music, and even watch television right on their mobile phones. The technology that allows such services is called 3G, a general term which can encompass any of several advanced wireless technologies.

As 3G technology becomes more popular, cell phones will gradually change into portable devices for advanced communication and entertainment.
