Long Distance Carriers
Until the past few years, long distance calling was primarily the domain of existing incumbent local service providers, like Bell and Telus in Canada, and AT&T and Verizon in the US. These days, however, many customers don't use the same provider for long distance as they do for their local calling needs. A variety of discounted long distance services are now available at rock bottom rates, and many customers are switching to mobile phones or VoIP services for their long distance calling needs. This trend of increasing competition has brought industry-wide calling rates down considerably, and made it a much harder business for traditional telephone companies to succeed in. This has resulted in many phone providers consolidating their long distance businesses, and carrying out mergers and acquisitions to keep their businesses profitable. |
