Telephone Carriers
The North American telephone industry has been based on the dominion of a few incumbent local service providers for over a century. These incumbent providers currently include such big names as Bell, MTS, and Telus in Canada, and AT&T, Verizon, and Qwest in the United States. Although these monolithic telecom giants still service the majority of households and businesses with their local and long distance telephone services, the market is slowly beginning to become more competitive. The industry is becoming significantly more competitive, with a variety of alternatives to the telephone giants hitting the market for the first time. Many customers are moving to alternate technologies like mobile phones and Voice over IP. Most of the incumbent telephone providers have recognized the growing consumer demand for such services, and are offering them. This willingness to innovate into new services will likley mean the difference between growth and decline for companies trying to make it in today's telecom industry. |
